Q: What was the reason for using the band name "Osmose"?

A: We chose it for the unique reason that this French word precisely defines the feeling which animates us when we are playing music. Actually, though being also a chemical phenomenon, the osmosis means “mutual interdependence” and we have to admit that this last term pleased us well enough.

Q: Osmose consists of Thomas and Nicolas Dufour, which are brothers. What motivated you to form a band together?

A :  The decision to form a band together was taken very naturally. Actually we always played music together and Osmose was a logical step in our lives.  We both used to be in other bands but we really wanted to create our own music, having our artistic identity and the best way for it was to start a band together, without anyone else. The brotherly aspect is and will always remain sacred in Osmose.

Q: (H)existence is the name of your first release. What is the meaning of the name and what can you tell the readers about the music?

A: (H)existence is a concept that we found and on which the whole demo is built. The title is in fact a contraction of the Greek prefix “hexa” (6) and the French word “existence”. We imagined the existence as a 6-steps cycle:  birth, absence, knowledge, presence, consciousness, resurgence. This concept widely inspired the lyrical side of our songs and is the result of deep reflections.
Musically speaking, Osmose is black metal, sometimes melodic, sometimes atmospheric, with an old school touch. We compose above all the music which pleases us even if we maybe have to move from one defined category. We don’t follow any codes, any rules.

Q: What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?

A: Philosophy and introspective themes. Our lyrics deals with the human condition taken from a personal view, considered as a self-reflection. We don’t have any precise message to deliver because we prefer to let the listeners choose their own interpretation of our both musical and lyrical universe.

Q: What artists have influenced your band and its music?

A: We are naturally influenced by the black metal scene with bands like Peste Noire, Taake, Burzum, Rotting Christ, but also by many other bands from other scenes such as Hypno5e, Mastodon, Gojira, Helloween, and so on. We listen to a lot of different music styles from rock to electro and even rap, what equally constitutes a source of inspiration for us.

Q: Do you have a favorite lyrical line used in Osmoses' music?

A: It’s a tough one in the sense that each word, each sentence has its own importance. I think that if we had to choose only one, it would be the final transition from “A L’Aube Des Soupirs” which represents a point of non-return and a major step in the structure of the music itself. “Je jette les armes, m’envolant vers un monde libre de cette foule de clowns assoiffés”, which literally means in English “I lay down the arms, flying away towards a world free of this thirsty clowns’ crowd”.

Q: Can you tell the readers about the process of songwriting? Do you write all the music together?

A: Our songs come mainly from jams. We love to play hours and hours together and it’s often in these moments that we get ideas of composition. Then we exploit most of them and little by little we add some elements and think about the instruments that we want to incorporate to finalize and to transform these ideas in songs. The music that we write constantly grows with our emotions and our state of mind, that’s why we prefer to take time and get the necessary distance when we compose.

Q: What is the main source of inspiration when writing new music?

A: We are primarily inspired by our own reflections and discussions. The frame in which we evolve has also a large impact and it’s the reason why we enjoy the peace of the countryside and the closeness of nature in particular when we want to write lyrics. Otherwise, loneliness can also be a source of inspiration. When you’re alone, you can open your mind at 100%, there’s no limit.

Q: What are your plans for this year exactly?

A: For the upcoming months, we cannot be very active because Nicolas won’t be in Belgium during 4 months for his studies. So we won’t have the opportunity to work during this period. In the long term, we obviously have plans such as the recording of a full-length album and maybe the first appearances of Osmose on stage. Time will tell…

Q: Do you have any shout outs to give the readers?

A: Thank you for reading this interview. Don’t hesitate to check out our first demo, it’s available for free download on our Bandcamp page, and please give us your feedbacks ! Keep it true !

(Facemelter Webzine would like to thank Osmose for this great interview. We highly recommend to check out Osmoses' first demo which could be interesting for every fan of black metal and beyond! cheers)
