Depths Of Hatred - Aversionist Review

Depths Of Hatred is a 5-member deathcore Band from Montreal, Canada. The first full-length album called "Aversionist" came out in 2012 through Galy Records.

I downloaded the tunes from Realm-Of-Metal because I wanted to review a deathcore release again, but because I was afraid that this could be really generic and primitive deathcore it took long time to start listening to it carefully. I then finally found time to give it a listen and I have to say that I am impressed.

This is not what I expected, the music is brilliant, the album cover is sexy and everything on this album fits perfectly together.Compliments to the band! They really maganged to write a very solid and authentic deathcore album. You can clearly hear that the band concentrates more on the death metal side of deathcore and almost not at all on hardcore. This is no breakdown/beatdown core. This first full-length of the album is very very well written and composed. You can find the perfect mixture of melody and brutality. The album consists of many melodic riffs that still sound very evil, groovy parts and also very technical riffs. You can find everything a good deathcore release needs!

In contrast to other deathcore bands, these guys really try to write sophisticated music that still sounds good and easy. Where a other deathcore band would play a breakdown, these guys try to play a really groovy slam or try to incorporate a sick solo. The greatest strength of the band is the structure of the songs and songwritting in general. I'm fascinated. You have a large amount of riffs / song, great breakdowns, nice solos and so on. The drummer is a beast. He mostly plays tight blast beats for a long time, plays interesting fill-ins and is totally in time with the guitars. The drums are diverse and very dynamic. The drumming brings the music to a new level and gives it much power in its sound.

The bass is good mixed, can't complain about it. I hate it when people review deathcore albums and say stuff like "you can not hear the bass" or "the bass sucks, it follows the guitars", etc.. Read the official definition of deathcore or just write deathcore on wikipedia! Then look what the role of the bass is in deathcore. You will than see that the bass is supposed to follow the guitars, the isn't allowed to be too loud, the bass is an instrument that is used to give the music a kick in the ass so that it has more tits! Just listen to the music with good headphones and you will hear how massive it sounds! On "Aversionist" the bass is perfetly mixed and gives the music a great depth. It also variates at some points so it is well done.

The guitar players use almost all techniques that you can use to create an awesome deathcore album. For example they play cool tremolo picked melodic riffs, groovy triols, sweeps, tapped leads, chuged reakdowns and so on. The sound of the guitars is good, standard distortion with with much pressure and recorded very well.

The vocals are also very nice. I really enjoy the high growls and growls that sound like inhales; I'm not 100% sure if they are inhale but they sound so and sound good. They remind me of the first "Cap De Craniu" EP, also a band that you have to check out! but back to the vocals, they are bonecrushing and solid. The voice of the singer is full of anger and power and it fitts perfectly to the music.

Check out this bonecrushing release by "Depths Of Hatred", you won't regret it and I'm really looking forward to the new album! My favorite song is Spawn Of Synthesis, check that one out if you want! cheers!
