Q: What was the reason for using the band name "Mother Abyss"? Does it have a specific meaning for you as a band? 

A: It doesn´t have a special meaning for us. The name just came across while we were listening to Black Breath. It sounded well and we liked it. Simple as that.


Q: Mother Abyss was founded in Portugal in 2012. One year later, you already released your first EP album called "Burden" that consists of 6 unique tracks that could be classified as "atmospheric sludge metal with an hardcore vibe"; How did the band get together, how did the material come together for the EP and how was the reaction of the fans when first listening to the album ? 

A: We are four guys that share the same influences. We had a rehearsal and we really worked well together. We started doing some shows during 2012, and then we decided to stop and create something fresh and new, that really defined us. The result was ‘Burden’ and it was a very natural process. We recorded it at Sá da Bandeira Studios and it was a very inspirational experience. The feedback has been very positive and we are really excited about that. We´re pleased that our work had pleased the fans and the press.


Q: As the band was founded, did you exactly knew what genre you want to play or did it just come along while rehearsing / playing together ? 

A: When we started we had some post/stoner/sludge kind of stuff, and we played some shows with that material, but then we realized that wasn’t what we wanted so we took some time to come up with new songs that we thought defined better what we wanted to sound like. Those songs became “Burden”.


Q: Tell the readers something about your album "Burden". What is special about this EP and why should people go check it out? 

A: ‘Burden’ is a conceptual ep about tragedy and despair, that mixes elements of sludge, hardcore and post, and we like to think that this combination provides a different and unique experience to the listener.


Q: How is the metal scene in Portugal like? Describe us the metal-community in your city of origin Viana Do Castelo. 

A: It´s alive. We have promoters such as SWR and Caveira Productions that keep the scene strong.


Q: What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send? 

A: ‘Burden’ is about a royal love story that ended up in tragedy; it talks about dark themes such as despair, betrayal, anger and madness.


Q: What song do you enjoy playing the most live? 

A: Personally I enjoy the most ‘O fim da história e o último homem’ because is the most challenging and fast song we have.


Q: What artists have influenced your band and its music?

A: Our biggest influences are bands like Mastodon, Cult of Luna, Old Man Gloom or Converge.


Q: What are your plans for 2014, what can fans expect from "Mother Abyss" in the future ? 

A: Currently we are still presenting our ep live, we have our last concert of the year on the 7th. We will continue to play live and present the ep in the next year. Though, we´re preparing some surprises. Stay tuned.
